Wedding Music Explained

Introduction to Traditional Wedding Music

We have written the following page to help brides and grooms who are getting married in Melbourne, Australia and who need to understand the importance of traditional western wedding music at both the marriage ceremony and the wedding reception.

Ceremony music is traditionally broken into 4 parts musically, with each section requiring careful consideration. The following is a brief description of each musical section.

The prelude

This refers to wedding music that is played to your guests while they are waiting for the bride to enter the church or ceremony. The wedding music played here is usually very subtle organ, piano, vocal solo, jazz, or classical.

The Processional

This refers to the wedding music played when the bride enters the ceremony, and walks down the aisle. The wedding music played here is usually grand in style, and should signify the character and style of the bride.

The Interlude

This refers to the music played whilst the bride and groom sign the marriage register. Wedding music played here is usually very subtle in style, similar to The Prelude.

The Recessional

This refers to wedding music that is played when the bride and groom depart the ceremony as husband and wife, and is usually grand in style, similar to The Processional.

Wedding Music at your Reception

Just like your ceremony, your wedding music for your reception is extremely important, and is broken into several parts, the main ones are outlined briefly below.

Pre-Dinner Wedding Music

This refers to the wedding music played whilst your guests are getting prepared for your reception. At this stage of your wedding, your guests will enjoy some canapes or Hors D'ouvres, to a setting of light music.

Guest Entrance Wedding Music

This refers to the wedding music played as your guests enter your wedding reception and are seated. The music here should be very subtle in nature, perhaps even more subtle than during pre-dinner drinks.

Reception Introduction Wedding Music

This refers to music played during the welcoming of the Bridal Party into the wedding reception. This type of wedding music can be played either "Live" or on CD and can be as grand or subtle as your personal taste deems.

This refers to wedding music played during the entrees, and should be subtle enough to allow your guests to talk, without having to shout

Cutting of the Cake Wedding Music

This refers to the wedding music played during the cutting of the wedding cake. The music here is usually very subtle, allowing guests to take photos and videos of the bride and groom.

Bridal Waltz Wedding Music

This refers to the wedding music played when you have your first official dance together as husband and wife, which also opens the dance floor at your wedding reception.

Dance Brackets

This refers to music played after the Bridal Waltz, and usually takes place after either the main meal or the desserts. Wedding music played during the dance brackets will much louder and more celebratory than at any other time during your wedding reception.

Garter Toss Wedding Music

This refers top wedding music played during the garter removal by the groom, and the tossing of the garter to potential grooms. The music here tends to be raunchy in nature, and should be loud enough to create the appropriate atmosphere.

This refers to the wedding music played during the tossing of the bridal bouquet. The music here should be loud enough to create the appropriate atmosphere.

Farewell Wedding Music

This refers to the wedding music played whilst the bride and groom make their way around to all their guests to say thank-you. It also refers to the wedding music played as bride and groom hold hands and depart the wedding reception.

The music here should be popular enough to dance or sing to, but subtle enough to allow the bride and groom to talk to their guests
