Introduction to Traditional Wedding Music
We have written the following page to help brides and grooms who are
getting married in Melbourne, Australia and who need to understand the
importance of traditional western wedding music
at both the marriage ceremony and the wedding reception.
Ceremony music is traditionally broken into 4 parts musically, with
each section requiring careful consideration. The following is a brief
description of each musical section.
The prelude
This refers to wedding
music that is played to your guests while they are waiting for the
bride to enter the church or ceremony. The wedding music played here
is usually very subtle organ, piano, vocal solo, jazz, or classical.

The Processional
This refers to the wedding
music played when the bride enters the ceremony, and walks down
the aisle. The wedding music played here is usually grand in style,
and should signify the character and style of the bride.

The Interlude
This refers to the music played whilst the bride and groom sign the
marriage register. Wedding
music played here is usually very subtle in style, similar to The
Prelude.
The Recessional
This refers to wedding music
that is played when the bride and groom depart the ceremony as husband
and wife, and is usually grand in style, similar to The Processional.

Wedding Music at your Reception
Just like your ceremony, your wedding
music for your reception is extremely important, and is broken into
several parts, the main ones are outlined briefly below.
Pre-Dinner Wedding Music
This refers to the wedding music played whilst your guests are getting
prepared for your reception. At this stage of your wedding, your guests
will enjoy some canapes or Hors D'ouvres, to a setting of light music.

Entertainment
Guest Entrance Wedding Music
This refers to the wedding music played as
your guests enter your wedding reception and are seated. The music here
should be very subtle in nature, perhaps even more subtle than during
pre-dinner drinks.

This refers to music played during the welcoming of the Bridal Party
into the wedding reception. This type of wedding music can be played
either "Live" or on CD and
can be as grand or subtle as your personal taste deems.
